30 X 35 Graphite on Paper
As Jesus is Carrying his Cross through the North Gate of Jerusalem on the way to Golgotha Scripture says Women and Children are with him. I wanted to capture the moment where Mary Magdeline possibly reaches out to touch him as he walked through the gate. In hopes to help but unable to do anything for him she is in disbelief of the pains he is going through and the trauma his Body is enduring.
Jesus is determined to "Bear His Cross." He has the physic that could carry it ultimately to his death. Is there anything more physically demanding than this? To carry his own cross up the hill ultimately that will be the marker of his last public sermon before he gives up the ghost?
Peter is in the background impressionistically gesturing his hand down after recognizing he just denied his Lord. John the Beloved is to the viewers left of the savior with his family unable to attend to his Brothers needs. Mary, the Saviors Mother, is to the left of him in sheer sadness seeing his Son in this condition.
My hope was to have others, including children, showing their concern for their Lord with their body language and facial expression. In one of the darkest moments of Human history the light of the world is shown completely determined, with very little help, to finish his sacred mission on the earth, which I KNOW he did and now stands at the right hand side of God.
