"Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master." — John 20:16 This painting captures the precise, breathless hinge-point of Mary at the tomb of Christ. It focuses on the raw, sudden shift from paralyzing grief to overwhelming, transcendent realization. The composition is a stark contrast between light and shadow. The left side of the canvas is dominated by heavy, cool, indigo-toned brushstrokes that wrap around her like a shroud or a dark hood, symbolizing a state of mourning, hiddenness, or personal trial. However, from the upper right, a warm, golden, and brilliant white light fractures across her face and garments. This light doesn''t just illuminate her features; it actively dispels the darkness, signifying hope, truth, and the warmth of a sacred presence breaking through bringing light. Reproduced from the artist''s original artwork of Acrylic on Canvas 20” x 24”. Painted 2026.

About the Artist

Layne Haacke, an artist residing in the heart of the Ozarks in Missouri, is a laid-back lefty who can't resist doodling with his pencil. He is a die-hard sports fan, father of three boys, amateur philosopher, and humble believer in Jesus Christ our Savior. Classically trained at Brigham Young University in illustration and visual arts, He has always veered toward creative expression. He was a founding Member of the A cappella singing group InsideOut that performed at venues across the country at the turn of the century, producing 6 Albums. His art is often an inspired vision of faith and art, blending the new with the old into inspiring views of holy things. Layne’s art, rich with religious themes and serene depictions of Jesus Christ, aims to share the peace and beauty he sees through his unique perspective.
