Christ is issuing the call to come follow him. This might have been more than a one time event based on the accounts in the New Testament but regardless, I wanted this moment to not only be beautiful but intentional.
This is an ocean shore scene, the sandy beach starts in the foreground and extends out toward the left third of the painting into the sea. The is a small bluff on the far left of frame with some palm trees that go out of frame. As we follow the shore out, there are more palm trees that lead to a larger clump of trees where Christ is approaching in a white robe. At the distant shore, there are boats with fishermen unloading or working. The scene feels like a quite peaceful cove where the water is relatively calm. There is an additional shore on the other side of the waters where there is a sand beach and vegetation is growing.
