Art Story

Caligraphy, the art of beautiful writing, begins with a dip pen and ink. Julia Fish Thompson uses this elegant tool to create the thick and thin lines of the lettering found in this artwork in a single stroke. Her love and expertise of her craft creates a vision of The Living Christ as has never been presented before.

This extraordinary combination of word and picture begs to be read and examined closely. Thompson's use of iconic symbols and subtle graphics help to illustrate the depth and beauty behind the message of The Living Christ. The greek letters Alpha and Omega sit at the top and bottom of the work marking the beginning and the end. Grapes represent Jesus himself as the vine, and Christians who abide in Him are fruitful branches. The Christus, the Lamb of God, and schools of fish can be found. There is the Crown of Thorns as well as a more traditional regal crown. The sun for light and the nails of a carpenter illustrate the page as well.

About the Artist

Julia Fish Thompson won a handwriting award in elementary school, took her first calligraphy class at age 13, and majored in design at Brigham Young University.  She letters on anything that will hold still—paper, board, walls, metal, glass, canvas, fabric, various objects--and has maintained a home studio since her teens.  She continues to study with amazing calligraphers around the world.  The challenge of executing involved, hand-lettered pieces has exhilarated Julia for years and she loves to create custom works commemorating events or personalized for families or businesses.   Julia and her husband David reside in Zionsville, Indiana where they recently finished raising four children.  Julia met Liz Lemon Swindle at a community nativity event where they were guest artists and Liz invited her to join with other Havenlight artists, a true honor, especially for a calligrapher.
