German Primrose is a best guess at the flower shown here as it is sometimes hard to know exactly the flower. Minerva was known to present a painted set of flowers to friends, relatives, and neighbors as reminders of significant events in their lives. They are often referred to as “wedding” and “funeral” flowers.
As she would with many of her works, any handy surface could be used. What is super fun about this piece is that a portion of an abandoned color pencil drawing featuring a white multi-level structure and a nearby tree can be found the flowers’ on its backside.
